‘Daughter Shine’ Music Video By Monique Thomas

Monique Thomas is a native of Birmingham (UK) and is breaking ground at a tremendous pace through-out the UK and internationally with her debut album ‘Unbroken’ which is described by many as “Not only soul music… But music for the soul.”

The former teacher and now vulnerable women’s worker, releases her debut video for the soulful smash, ‘Daughter Shine’ today 15/11/11.

Thomas; a gifted songwriter and soul singer has her roots deep within Gospel music and is using her music to reach the masses with uplifting, inspiring and heart-felt songs that are not only sweet to the ear but soothing to the heart and mind.. Her early musical development was influenced by many of the great soul and R’nB artists of her time such as Lauryn Hill, Mary J Blige, and India Arie, which is reflected in the vocal depth, and rich tone of her own voice.

Since releasing her debut album ‘Unbroken’ in April of this year, it’s been a busy stretch for Monique. Having supported US soul sensation ‘Dwele’ at the HMV institute Birmingham, at the request of his management she later joined him at the Jazz Café in London. This was followed by support for other soul greats such as Eric Benet and US songstress Avery Sunshine.

‘Daughter Shine’ has had a huge impact on the UK soul scene and has featured on a number of radio playlists up and down the country including Smooth Radio, Solar Radio and Starpoint. Produced by 5am Record’s Tony Bean (Lemar, Nu Life, Usher, Kelly Rowland), this song has a contemporary old school feel which is uplifting and inspirational.

The song speaks of a mentor who supported Monique through various challenges in her life. On her 21st birthday Monique’s mentor presented her with a card, written inside with an extract from Marianne Williamson’s poem part of which was;

“We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same…” Hence, inspiration for the song’s title ‘Daughter Shine.’

Directed by Kalvadour Peterson, the 3 friends in the video are used to reflect this relationship as well as Monique’s love of female solidarity and empowerment.
