Planetshakers ‘Heal Our Land’ Review

Planetshakers Heal Our Land

I’ve been a massive fan of Planetshakers for some years now so when I finally got round to listening to their latest album ‘Heal Our Land’ I was expectant and excited to say the least.

In classic Planetshakers form the album kicked off with big thick sounding guitars and the thunderous drumming of one of my favourite drummers (yeah, I’m a drummer too) Mike Webber.

I instantly got into the groove of ‘Supernatural’ and the pulsating riffs and musical arrangements resembling classic 80’s GLAM Rock. This was a strong start to the album and definitely made me anxious to hear more.

I loved how the Planetshakers band incorporated elements from Dance music in ‘Good To Me’ switching it up and definitely keeping me excited. I love the simplicity of the melodies and lyrics too. “You are so good to me, with everything I am I give you praise, you’re better than life to me with everything I’ll am I give you praise.”

‘Do It Again’ is my favourite of the album and I find myself repeating this one over and over again. This song has a more Sunday morning worship service vibe to it. It’s very congregational and gets me thinking about Samson and his desire for God to use him one last time. “Do it again, do it again, everything we’ve seen and more. Do it again, do it again Lord we believe for me, do it again.” I love the break down and find myself singing it a lot… “Do it again, do it again Jesus, woah oh oh.”

‘Heal Our Land’ is the title track of the album and is a powerful heart-song speaking of us reaching out to God, humbling ourselves and praying which is the formula found in scripture (2 Chronicles 2:9) If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”  I always love songs based on scripture and this is definitely one of those songs.

‘Hallelujah To The Lord’ is what I’d describe as a modern day hymn. From the melody and instrumentation to the lyrics, this song oozes congregational hymn and I can see it being big within churches that have a full band or just a piano or acoustic guitar. Fans of ‘In Christ Alone’ will take a liking to the song and the lyrics “Hallelujah to the Lord, hallelujah to our God, lift Him higher, above all things, Christ our Saviour, King above all Kings.”

I was surprised by ‘It’s You’, which sounded like something from an arcade game but in the best way possible. The sense of movement and excitement and fusion of styles make a refreshing combination and unlike what you’d normally hear on a worship album.

The thing I love about ‘Heal Our Land’ is that the title of the album is expressed throughout the project. The songs all express prayers, declarations and scriptures that all empower us to be in a place where God can use us to literally ‘Heal Our Land’ and make a difference to the world and society.

Musically, you’re in for a treat with this one. One thing that surprised me was the fusion of styles throughout the album and even some musical choices that I didn’t expect.  Subtle hints at more ‘Gospel’ styled progressions, the inclusion of hard-hitting synths and Dance/Electro rhythms, mixed in with the Planetshakers classic Pop/Rock sound we’ve all grown to love them for. If you’re a fan of Planetshakers I think you’ll love ‘Heal Our Land’. If you’re new to them, I think you’ll be surprised by the diversity you’ll find on the album and will like enough of the tracks on the album to make it a worthy purchase.
